Kwa Maritane
The reserve was established in 1979, and declared a National Park in 1984. The idea behind the park was to not only preserve biodiversity, but to also maximise the economic contribution to the region through eco tourism. It is the largest and most accessible reserve within a 2hr drive of Gauteng.
Pilanseburg is the first large protected area of land that was deliberately created for local economic improvement and regional development, taking into account conservation knowledge, community participation, ecological restoration, all while satisfying tourist needs.
Highlights
The park is one of 3 alkaline volcanoes in the world around 2000 million years ago.
At its zenith, the peak stood 7000m in height, rivalling Africa’s tallest peak, Kilimanjaro.
The area has been inhabited since the Middle Stone Age.
In total, around 22 different species were released into the park and today, the area boasts thriving populations that rival those recorded in 1836.
Our Partners, Legacy Resorts hold 3 of the 7 commercial lodges in the park
